This Week in Weather 5/4: Severe Thunderstorms in the Plains

For This Week in Weather, we’ll be sharing the big weather stories and the impact in the US for the coming week of May 4, 2020. So on that note, may the fourth be with you.

Let’s get to it!

Monday (5/4)

Strong to severe thunderstorms become possible across Kansas on Monday morning, as a weather disturbance tracks though the Central Plains. Hail and strong winds will be possible from these storms. Then heading into the afternoon, the risk for strong to severe storms shifts eastward into Missouri, southern Illinois, and northern Arkansas.

Business impact: For airlines with parked airplanes across the southwest, hail can pose a huge risk of damage to vulnerable equipment.

Tuesday (5/5)

A risk for afternoon/evening thunderstorms exists across the ArkLaTex region, and eastward into Mississippi, as instability increases along and ahead of a cool front tracking southward across the region.

Business impact: For energy companies, lightning strikes pose a risk to wires and may increase the risk out outages.ย ย

Wednesday-Friday (5/6-5/8)

Generally quiet conditions anticipated across much of the Lower 48 during the latter half of the work week.

Business impact: Enjoy the weather and get outside!
